Q: Have been diagnosed with burning tongue syndrome for the past five years. Could it be OAB?

Have seen many drs over the years for BMS.  I have hay fever, allergies to cat hair, cedar, Russian thistle, rabbit brush, firebrush, ragweed.  No food allergies.  Moved to southwest from northeast eight years ago.   Any thoughts?  This syndrome is driving me crazy!

Hi Winnie... I must admit I have never heard of "burning tongue syndrome" before and when I first read your post, I wondered if it was just something your doctor made up to appease you. Undecided

But, when in doubt, I always turn to the Internet to research topics and I found that burning mouth syndrome appears to be real. In fact, here's a pretty detailed article on it:

However, I think your question about oral allergy syndrome (you DID mean OAS, not OAB, right?) is a valid one. People with your kinds of pollen allergies do often have OAS. So it might be worth getting a second opinion from an allergist.

Good luck,

Kathi

Hi Winnie, my name is Rebecca and I live in Galveston Texas. I was diagnosed with Burning Mouth Syndrome NINE years ago...after going to 13 doctors...yep...very frustrating! Finally Baylor College of Medicine in Houston - the Director of Infectious Diseases - made the case for me. I had every test out there. I have extreme pain down my throat, on the roof of my mouth, my tongue swells, I have small sores on the inside of my cheeks and lower lip and my neck glands swell at times. Like you I also have alot of allergies and take allergy injections every month. I was told there is no cure...oh boy!...but the syndrome "should" run it's course in five to six years. However, I'm still struggling with it. I feel very exhausted most of the time and can sleep ten to twelve hours straight if I'm in a bad state and my mouth is in a bad break out. Right now there's nothing I can do but see a pain management doctor for pain relief. I've tried most everything - accupuncture, yoga, stress classes, massage therapy, natural meds, black licorice (sp), vitamins, homiopathic therapy, teas and most of all prayer. I hope this helps you a little....you aren't alone!! It's miserable I know!! Take care and stay strong! Be well.
