Q: Can all garlic allergic individuals eat fried garlic?

My daughter who is 18 months was diagnosed with a garlic allergy at 7 months (hives, loose stool) after eating a baby snack that contained garlic powder.  She recently ate a home fried potato that contained garlic powder but it was deep fried.  She had no reaction, so we repeated a few days later and she loved eating them and still had no reaction.  The allergist suggested we begin to slowly experiment but I am hesitant to move on from fried food, and wondering if all garlic allergic people can tolerate fried garlic or if (hopefully!!) her body is beginning to overcome this allergy.

Thanks for any information,

Heather

Heather, I have never heard that frying foods would reduce their allergic properties. I think it is more likely that your daughter's allergy may be lessening over time. However, food allergies often don't go away, so as your allergist suggested, take your time and be careful about testing her allergy with foods. And be prepared to take emergency action if needed.

Take care,

Kathi
