Q: can water softener cause skin rashes and itching

we moved into our new house 3 years ago and when our well was tested we were told we needed a water softener.  Shortly thereafter the back of my neck started itching but didn't go any further.  Then several months later is went to the left side of my head and my left arm around my elbow.  I have been going to a dermatologist for 2 years now and he is baffled.  It is not a food allergy and it will get better and then flare up again and when it flares up it will move to the right side of my head, a rash at the back of my neck and on both of my elbows.  We have turned off the water softener after seeing the other comments on this sight.  If it is the softener can you use different salt of filters for the system or do we just go without.  Heather Miller
