Q: Nasal congestion for over a year

Hi,

Starting in January 2009, I got continuous sinus infections until late March of 2009 until they seemed to go away. That following summer I also had two ear infections.

Since then I have had one continuously blocked nostril. It's not always the same nostril. It can be either the left or right side, but it's always only one. My ears seem to be making alot more wax than they have ever made before and sometimes they are itchy on the inside. Also, my throat almost always feels like I have something stuck in it, like a thick mucous or something. I drink alot of water to try to get rid of the feeling but it doesn't always work.

I was perscribed Fluticason Propionate in March 2009 right after my last sinus infection cleared up. They said it was to prevent further infections. But it began to make me dizzy about two months into taking it so I stopped taking it. I didn't get anymore sinus infections when they started me on it, but my one nostril never opened up either.

I've had mild seasonal allergies in the past, so I thought maybe it they are just getting worse and becoming year-round allergies. Currently, I take over the counter generic allergy pills with Loratadine and Pseudoephedrine almost every day and it doesn't help. I try the hot showers, tea, humidifiers, air purifiers and netti pots but nothing seems to clear my sinuses.

I was sent to a specialist who had a CAT scan of my sinuses done to see if it was a skelatal problem but he said everything looked good and sent me on my way.

I'm still having trouble breathing through only one nostril and I still feel like something is stuck in my throat most of the time and I can't figure out what could be causing it. Occasionally, about twice a week, I get very bad headaches that seem to originate from pressure in my forehead and around my nose. Also, if this helps anything at all, I never get the itchy/watery eyes or sneezing most other allergy sufferers get.

Do you have any ideas?

Hi there... Sorry to hear you're having it so rough. You definitely deserve to get some answers, but diagnosing such problems isn't always easy. And it's also not something we can do over the Web, unfortunately. But your symptoms are ones that can be associated both with nasal allergies and chronic sinusitis.

Consulting with an allergist might help you find the answers to what's going on. The fluticasone you were originally prescribed is an inhaled steroid and it doesn't really prevent infections, but it does reduce inflammation in your nasal passages. If you had unpleasant side effects from that, there are many other similar medications that could be tried that you might do fine with. The allergist could discuss that with you.

Good luck & feel better!
