Q: I had a random allergic reaction yesterday..???

So, yesterday while eating at a local mall with a friend, I started to feel werid, and then I noticed my tounge felt strange. Then I realized my tounge was starting to swell. I started feeling dizzy/light-headed. I told my friend, "I don't feel well, somthings not right." I said I thought I was having an allergic reation to something. I stepped outside and within 5 minutes I felt better. But my tounge still felt swollen (I could still breath fine though.)

I've never had an allergy to anything before. And the only thing I ate that day different from what i normally do was a quesadilla, with spicy chicken. So I'm thinking it was some sort of spice that I've never had before? I know you can devolped allergies even if you've had something before.

Also, I still feel like my tounge is swollen, even after taking bendril about three times since the attack happened. Because I've never had a reaction before and because my tounge is still slighty swollen(this might sound werid) I sometimes feel like my tounge is sweeling again, and for a minute I cant breath. I take two deep breaths and I feel fine again, (tounge still a bit swollen.)  Could my "freak outs" occuring now by a mental thing?  Because when it happened it scared the crap out of me!

It was werid.

Hello,

Sounds like a frightening experience, and you are good to be concerned. As you say, food allergies can strike at any time, to new foods or to foods you've had before. The first reaction can be a deadly one, or... it may be relatively mild, and then get more and more severe with each succeeding exposure. There's really no way to predict what will happen.

As for whether the symptoms you're feelng today are leftovers from the original allergic reaction, it's hard to say. Panic is a powerful force, and it could be that your fear is magnifying how you're feeling.

I'd like to suggest that you call your doctor and discuss whether any further kind of treatment might be indicated. You may also want to consult with an allergist about allergy testing to learn more about what you might have been allergic to, if anything.

Good luck!

Kathi
