I have bad allergies which lead to give me bad sinus pressure and congestion, however what has recently been bugging me is an itchy/scratchy throat that only feels better when im eating. I do take allegra but that only dries me up and does nothing for my throat

Also, can allegies cause the lymph nodes to swell? i have a bump behind my right ear, and one that is by my jaw.

Hi Jess,

Itching in the throat, roof of the mouth and inside the nostrils are all common symptoms of nasal allergies. I often have the itchy throat feeling. It's awful, isn't it? As with many allergy symptoms, if medication doesn't help, you may just have to wait for it to pass.

However, if you manage to figure out what is triggering the feeling, then do be sure to do your best to avoid that substance. Of course, some allergy triggers are easier to avoid than others!

Also, there is a condition called Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) that can cause the itchiness in response to eating certain foods. It seems there are similarities between some pollen-producing plants and related fruits and vegetables.

For instance, people who are allergic to ragweed pollen may also be allergic to banana, chamomile, cucumber, echinacea, melon (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew), sunflower seed and zucchini. Get more info on this condition here

I encourage you to talk openly with your doctor about how you are feeling. Perhaps there is a different allergy medication that can be tried. Also, be sure to ask about the swollen lymph nodes. so that your doctor can get to the bottom of what is causing it.

To your health,

Kathi
