Q: why would I have an allergic reaction only to soft shell but not hardshell crab?

Family history: My brother and his son are allergic only to shrimp, no other seafood.  Why would I react only to soft shell but not hard shell crab? When I eat it I break out in itchy hives. Does it have to do with chemicals present in the crab at that particular stage of growth?

It's really impossible to say why anyone is allergic to one thing but not the other. That's just the nature of allergies; they're largely unpredictable, especially food allergies. What you say could be possible, though. The main thing is, once you know what triggers your allergic reactions, is to avoid that food at all costs.
