Q: Can a period cause asthma to get worse?

I am wondering if when you have your period could it make an asthmatics asthma worse?

Hi Jade,

 

I wouldn't say it is common, but shifts in hormone levels, such as those experienced during menstruation and menopause can trigger asthma attacks in certain women. I would discuss how you are feeling with your doctor, possibly even an asthma specialist. It may be that your medication regime could be adjusted during your periods.

 

At the very least, be sure you have your rescue inhaler on hand at all times, so that you can use it as needed.

Actually, yes, it could.  According to a doctor at the Mayo Clinic, it happens in up to 50% of female asthma patients:
