Q: Any other Allergy Treatments?

Hello,

I am 22 years old and suffering from severe allergies and allergy-induced-asthma, all environmental allergies.  I have been treated for 10 years using allergy shots, inhalers, and oral antihistamines that include zyrtec, claritin, hydroxyzine, singulair, and albuterol.     My allergies have increasingly been getting worse to the point where I end up on high doses of prednisone or even in the hospital several times in the spring/summer/fall.  I have chronic sinusitis thanks to my allergies. I started using a sinus nebulizer and doing a sinus rinse to try and help with all the pain/inflammation.  Fever, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, asthma attacks, lung inflammation and pain haunt me during the allergy seasons.  I went off my medications for some time to see if they are actually helping anymore, there was no change.  Everyday inhalers have an adverse effect on my asthma, they actually make it worse; they have never worked for me.

I don't know what to do anymore.  It is to the point where even being  in moderate levels of pollen for a few minutes will send me into a spiral that will lead to the two above outcomes.   I can no longer take high doses of prednisone and many other medications due to liver and pancreatic damage that I received last year (the doctors thought due to medications)   I can take low doses (10-20mg/day) of prednisone which keep my allergies at bay but no doctor will allow this during my worst seasons, they would rather put me on 5-6 other medications at triple the normal dose (I have asked)

What can I do?  Am I out of options?  Are "conventional" treatments the only thing available for allergies?  I am going to move to a colder, drier, and higher climate but even there I am allergic to some things.  Will they continue to get worse and worse?

Thank you for reading,

Hi Sammy... Sorry to hear you're having such a rough time. Allergies can be tough to deal with. It's really not possible for us to advise you on such specifics over the Internet though. I'd like to suggest you see an allergy specialist, if you haven't already. Or a different one, if you've already been to one. No harm in getting a second (or third) opinion. You might also try to locate a holistic practitioner to see what other options might work for you.

Good luck,

Kathi

Thank you. I've seen several allergists and they all treat with the same things:  inhalers, antihistamines, and allergy shots.  It is amazing that the medical community has not made any major advancements in the treatment of allergies in 20 years...
