Q: My mother has COPD and sleeps with a cat in her bed. Can this effect her COPD?

My mother has COPD, she lives with a cat in her bedroom and the cat sleeps on her bed. Many of our family members are allergic to this paticular cat, but my mom says that the cat does not effect her COPD since she is not allergic the cat. Common sense tells me that she could be effected by the cats pressence in her bed, I'm I correct in saying this?

Hi Matt... Generally, the only real risk would be if your mother is also sensitive to cat allergens. COPD is not an allergic disease and exposure to cats should not trigger COPD symptoms. So, unless your mom has a cat allergy, then it should not be a risk for her to sleep with her cat in the bed.

And, possibly, having her cat with her in the bed could improve the quality of her life overall. So, I probably wouldn't make an issue of this. But is there another reason why you are concerned and asking about this?

Best,

Kathi
