Q: if someone is allergic to Penicillin, can they take Amoxicillin?

I have an old prescription for Amoxicillin that I never used. I've since found out I'm allergic to Penicillin. I have a tooth that is infected and it will be a while until it can be pulled. Can I take the Amoxicillin to control the infection until then? Or is it likely that I would have an allergic reaction because it's in the same class as Penicillin? My reaction was hives on face/chest and joint pain.
