Q: can hives be caused by a drug reaction?

Yes.  And if it isn't from the drug's ingredients, then it could be from the drug containing trace amounts of an allergen in the manufacturing facility.  I learned of a child with peanut allergies using an over-the-counter cold medicine.  The pharmaceutical company admitted the medicine was processed in a plant that also processed peanuts.

My friend gets huge hive outbreaks from sulf drugs and penicillin.
