My granddaughter(12) is taking 3 10mg tablets once a day, not under Dr supervision.Is this harmful?
My granddaughter was taking a prescription allery drug (60mg) Do not know the name of Rx. My daughter-in-law decided to take her off it and with out Dr. instructions put her on Zyrtec tablets 10mg, 3 tablets a one time. Feeling since she took a 60mg Rx it is ok to replace with 3 10mg Zyrtec.

Thank you for your question. Your granddaughter should not be taking 30 mg of Zyrtec! It is important to understand that even though both medications are for allergies, the doses are not equivalent. For example, 60 mg of the old medication is not the same as 60 mg of the new medication. The recommended dose for adults and children older than 6 is 5 or 10 mg daily - significantly less than the 30 mg your granddaughter is receiving. As she is receiving three times the maximum recommended dose, she may be experiencing some side effects of the medication, including (but not limited to): dizziness, dry mouth, diarrhea, insomnia, and sedation. Please advise your daughter-in-law to consult with a doctor or pharmacist if she needs further information.
