Hi Tom, Thank you for your question. Your granddaughter should not be taking 30 mg of Zyrtec! It is important to understand that even though both medications are for allergies, the doses are not equivalent. For example, 60 mg of the old medication is not the same as 60 mg of the new medication. The recommended dose for adults and children older than 6 is 5 or 10 mg daily - significantly less than the 30 mg your granddaughter is receiving. As she is receiving three times the maximum recommended dose, she may be experiencing some side effects of the medication, including (but not limited to): dizziness, dry mouth, diarrhea, insomnia, and sedation.
