I've developed a rash around my neck, itchy and my eyelids are swollen, now my ears a a little also, itchy and burn a little.
I've had the exact same symtoms. Red swollen eyelids, rashy neck, itchy ear lobes, redish nose and random outbreaks of all these symptoms I feel like it could be flavored dairy creamers (Coffee mate), feathers or both. In any event, I've been to the allergist and the dermatologist. I've had patch testing and cut grass was the only serious allergic reaction he could find. He gave me Zyrtec (which did not help). The dermatologist prescribed Locoid Lipocream which seems to help. However, I was taking a vitamin Flax, fish and Borage which also seems to help. I almost feel like it's a deficiency of some sort now. I though at one point it was a horomone issue as I remember that my mother used to complain about the same thing as she went though menopause (maybe like a symptom). We both had hysterectomy in our thirties. We both experienced this in our fourties.
Did you every find an answer to your question? I am having the exact same symptoms. What I found interesting about yours is the things youo were exposed to! I use the coffe mate flavored cream, but always have. I have been using feathers for making hats for a play my daughter is in. My eyes are almost swollen shut and I have a rash on my face, necjk and ears! If you had an answer, let me know. I am heading to the doctor tomorrow.
Not sure if it is the same but I had really swollen eyes, heat, itchy and the redness traveled down my nose line. It was horrible eventually had to be prescribed steroid. All the doctors I went to told me it was because of my allergies... the I was diagnosed with Lyme disease. Something to look into.
i have almost the exact same thing,
me and my mom thought it was an allergic reaction to something,
but the rash and the itchyness never left my neck and ears, also my eye is still a bit swollen.
im also abit dry on my chin and on the side of my lip.
i really want to know what is going on so i can do something about it.
I have had variations of this for the past few months and went to the Dr. who told me it is most likely allergies and to take Zyrtec for about 30 days....
Now- I have the rash on my neck again and it is dry and itchy... zyrtec appears to NOT be helping..... not sure I should go to the dermatologist now or what???
i also have swollen eyes a few times a month, and ichy skin all over. i have been going to allergy specialits and a dermatologist. we are certain its an allergy, the problem is we dont know what im allergic to.
i have an appointment for patch testing and more allergy testing.
if u think its an allergy, then go to an allergy doctor and get testing.
i really think its something im eating but i cant figure out what it is.
Did you find out anything more? My symptoms come and go as well and I was for sure it was flavored coffee creamer but now I'm not sure. I went to the dermatologist and he prescribed Locoid Lipocream (I think it's steroids). He diagnosed it as psoriasis and the cream it seems to help. However, these are very specific symptoms from what Im reading which leads me to believe it could be something besides an allergy.
so i went to a natropath, i started taking fish oil and stopped eating dairy. these 2 thing combined have helped sooo much. i still have rashes on my neck and ears from time to time. but its so much better. i think everyone who has dry, itchy, sensitive skin should try one or both of these things!!!!!
Woke up about a week ago with itchy neck and it went away in a couple of days. This morning it is back and now I have swollen eyelids. Known intolerance for nuts, but extremely mild. However, I just realized I've eaten almonds in three different forms the last 3 days and probably built up a toxic level. No throat constrictions at all, just the neck and eyelids. Anyone have any OTC cream to suggest to alleviate the itching? I'm using oatmeal chilled in the fridge and that seems to help.
I've had the same problem but started on my left eye and my lips were tingling and felt burnt. That went away after the dr. put me on steroid. But she told me its likely to come back after I finished the steroid. It did but now its an itchy red rash just on my neck. I also know its ragweed season and I always get headaches and sneezing from that. Ragweed starts like clockwork every Aug 15 give or take a day. I feel like perfume is making this rash worse, but could it be causing it too?
Sounds to me like an allergic reaction similar to mine. Benadryl (over the counter) helped me a lot (but made me sleepy, too). I'd rather take that than steriods. Have been back to normal for a couple of weeks with no recurrence so I think the nuts were my problem. Seems like perfume would not aggravate it, but you never know.
Hey, gang: Just recently got rid of my very persistent rash around my eyes and wanted to post my experience, in case it mirrors anyone else's. I had been using cortisone cream for two straight years on a rash that wouldn't go away. It'd flare up and I'd use cortisone to keep it somewhat under control, but it'd always come back. Finally, after seeing a number of dermatologists, I saw a Dr. Rappaport in Beverly Hills who informed me that my skin had developed a dependency on cortisone, and the only way to correct the problem was to stop taking cortisone altogether. He said the rash would flare up terribly (which it did), but that after a couple of months, it would finally go away for good. I've been free from cortisone cream for two and a half months now, and the rash is completely gone. Hope this information helps!
Did the dermatologist tell you what the original cause of your rash was? I have the same dry red flaky redness on my skin between my eyelids and eyebrow region and also on my neck which keeps coming back. I've use steroid creams before but haven't been using it consistently. Went to go see a dermatologist and an allergist who had no definitive answer to what may be causing these rashes. I'm hoping that somehow my skin will build tolerance to whatever it is, but how long did your flare up last?
I see that your post was back in 2009. I am curious to learn what may have helped you.
7 days ago I awoke with swollen eyelids, upper and lower. They were red, itchy, and scaley. I noticed too that my cheeks and around my eyes as well as some of my neck was itchy and scaley too.
I am assuming that I touched something that I am allergic too. I've thrown out all of my make-up and won't use the new stuff until I am well. I've never had food or skin allergies before. I am a 50 year old female in excellent health, otherwise.
How are you now? Did it ever go away completely? How long did it last?
I have very similar symptoms and have no idea what it is. The doc said it's an allergic reaction but how often do allergic reactions cause weeping rashes? It started with just my eye feeling a bit swollen and itchy, i thought i'd been bit by a bug. The next morning I work to find my eye even more swollen, a red rash that itches on the back of my neck and side of my cheek, and a weeping itchy rash behind my ear. All of these are on the right side of my face / head. The doctor gave me corticosteroid and told me to use cortizone also but it seems worse this morning! If anyone has any idea as to what this is please post it. My right eye is almost swollen shut now. :(
I have the same problem, my eyebrows itch on the left side and i woke up with swollen eye lid, the bottom of my scule itch and my ears swell up and it itch. Now i have rash on my shoulders. It's spreading out, it feels swollen and red, and it itches. but there is no blisters. it's just Red. This is the second time it happen. Both times it happen in the winter...come to think maybe it's a cold weather thing and stress maybe I have no clue.
I know its a little post your posting date now, but I figured I would share some info with you guys. I had all the exact same symptoms. I was told at some point in time I came in contact with poison sumac. They said it wouldn't go away on its own and gave me a steroid shot and a dose pack. Within a week, for the first time in 2 months, all my symptoms were completely gone.
i have the exact same thing. swollen eyelids, itchy ears and when i scratch for too long a clear liquid comes out. When the rash came up on my eyes it wasnt that bad, but then i got in a fight with my brother and i cried and as the tears came down my face, every where the tears touched my face turned red. it stayed like that for about a week. also once when the rash was on my eyes my ears started itching and oozing. i got really got and my breath got short, started sweating really bad and felt like i was going to pass out. its really pissing me off. i think its an alleric reaction but i dont know what causes it. and it never gets very noticible if i dont itch it. ive been to the doctor several times and he always perscribes me creams which never seem to work. if i stop smoking for a couple of days it flares up but some times it flares up even when i am smoking. my ear is all red right now and itchy and i want to know what caused it. is anyone out there smarter than my doctor?
The only thing I've found that works on this kind of rash is Neem oil and Egyption Beauty cream. These products can be found at Central Market. I had an itchy rash on my eyelids, neck, ears and shoulders that began in April. It's really important to keep your eyelids clean and moisturized. Neem oil smells like rotting garlic and takes some getting use to but if you layer it on with the Egyption Beauty cream (which is really just Aloe Vera), within just a couple of days, you should feel considerably better. Keep the Neem oil out of your eyes-it burns! This rash is probably going to be chronic so keep up the cleaning and moisturizing everyday without fail. I feel so much better. I took steriods and used cortizone cream. Nothing works as well as the above products. Hope this helps.

I developed a similar rash this past summer. It got to the point where one of my eyes were so swollen it looked like I had been punched. Since it was only around my eyes, neck and ears, the docs assumed it was some type of allergic reaction, put me on prednisone 7 days. At the end of the 7 days, it started coming back, but worse. It was not something you could really go out in public with, much less work. I went back to the doc and told them, as always, I have not used any new products and since I have had eczema growing up I was used to not using any new or scented products. The only thing new I was taking was the antidepressent called amitriptyline (brand name: Elavil), prescribed for migraine prophylaxis. The doctor said she did not think the reaction was from the amitriptyline and put me on prednisone again 7 days. 7 days of perfect skin until the last day it started coming back again.
I called my neurologist who prescribes the amitriptyline and told him about the rash. He said he would give me something else and within a week of stopping the med the rash dissapeared. Come to find out based on my own reading, that particular drug can cause some type of photosensitivity which results in a rash in areas exposed to the sun. It makes sense since it was nowhere else on my body and I had seriously avoided other allergens, but I can't know for sure. This was in August 09 and now its Feb 10 and guess what? Rash is back! No new meds, lotions.... It's getting a bit ridiculous. I thought I would comment in case anyone else has ever taken amitryptyline and had this problem.....Maybe some insight about the past can help the future.
I developed this over the last 5 weeks. Itchy swollen eyes which eventually get scaley and the neck rash, only around the back of my neck. very srange since nowhere else itches. Been through the allergy shot, the prednisone, emergency room, shot again, dose pack, benadryl, alegra... the thing is, while I am on any treatment the symproms go away and within days after the treatment the symptoms would come back. These would occur mostly overnight after I eat. What am I allergic to? I cannot tell. Tried elimination but noticed that i was still swelling up even though I was not eating some things. Stil in the process of elimination. THis week it is wheat, (bread, cakes, flour etc) We will see. I am tired of swelling up. At one point I was even afraid to eat. One week I ate cereal and bread, but by Wednesday afternoon I was at the emergency room itching and swollen. Had not though of wheat at that time. Seemed so simple. Have been eating, and love bread all of my life. Maybe the allergy test will help. A lot of people seem to get that grass result. Any way it is most lokely an allergic reaction, hopefully elimination will help me find out what or whatever bug it is it will pass through my system sooner than later. In the meantime I am taking allegra, it is non-drowsy and eating with caution. Also drinking a lot of water. I am planning to try detox also.

I've been reading all these comments and I see myself in each and every one. I have swollen, red itchy eye lids on both eyes actually but one is worse then the other. I now have a rash which is very itchy on one side of my neck and continuing around to the back of my neck. I have had the eye issue for months my neck just for the last month. I have been using sea buckthorn oil and cream on all the itchy areas. It does give relief. I am almost positive I'm alergic to something but what? I avoid going to the doctor at all costs. I'm more into a natural remedies if I can. Thus the sea buckthorn products. One thing that I going to avoid is strawberries. Over the course of a few months I have eaten many. I think this may be a trigger.
I would like to add a footnote to my posting. It has been a week now of not eating strawberries, the redness is going from my eyelids. But what has happened now is my eyelids have become very dry, the skin is very flaky. I'm taking this as a good sign. I'm also using a natural cream called Boiron (with Ledum Palustre, Apis Mellifica Calendula) in it. This has stopped the itching on my neck. All in all I think I'm seeing a vast improvement in my condition.
hi everyone i dont directly know how you all feel but i do understand your frustration for answers.
i have a little girl who will be 4 in jan and since she was 1 she has suffered with servear excema, asthma, food and enviromental allergies. she has always suffered with the normal food allergie signs and flear ups of the excema when she has come into contact with one of her allergens. We started to go to a top london hospital with the best pediatric team in the uk a few months back. we start down the normal root of taking out milk and soya together and each one indervidually but neither made a difference.
over the last month she has started to intermittedly react in the same ways you have discribed. red itch eyes (almost red and ringed round her eyes) rash on her neck (very small condenced spots) ears becoming itchy but she also comes out in hives all over her the rest of her body.
unfortuanatly we have yet to see her consultants since these break outs have started happening. we are due to go next month in january. but knowing my daughter she will proberly be clear that day so i have tonight taken photos of her to show them if needed.
this perticualar out break tonight was 2 days after finishing a short cause of oral steriods (have had them since 1 never had a problem with them) and while being on antibiotic and a rountine dose of antihistamines and a normal routine of steriod creams. so in theroy she should not have come up in the unexplained way.
i will post again once i have been and let you know what is said
i know this post is old and im about 2 years late but for people like me that look things up online i hope to still be able to help them

I have had this for 2yrs now off and on. My eyelids start to get itchy (blepheritis I believe) then all around my nose and eyes itches and I get a red welt under my eye. It all starts with a warning that it's comming from a flat red rash on my neck...then my eyes swell almost shut..totally disfiguring my face. Also my ears get all wet and icky with eczema or whatever in them and I often loose my hearing. What the... is it??? I cannot figure it out to save my life. Been to an ear specialist and to my doctor and to a dermatologist, and they have all just released me after trying to figure it out and say "we just don't know". I've tried not wearing makeup for 4mths thinking it was that..but it wasn't. The only thing that works for me is prednisone..and that is not cool to take. I often wonder if it's an auto immune disorder as my body seems to be attacking itself...very very odd. I hope a doctor out there reads this and has dealt with this before. Any answers would be amazing.
I have been going thru it for 4 years! Can't figure it out but I do know this:
1. Many people are allergic to fingernail polish and have the same symptoms.
2. It could be a combination or 2 or 3 things so during your research do not rule out anything.
I may have found my issue with almonds. I go to the allergist next week for food testing. Wish me luck!
i have the same thing. I am a mature woman. it just came on suddenly. first i had an itchy scalp then it slowly spread. it comes in bursts, goes away for weeks then it sback again exactly the same. you cant see the rash, it feels as tho it is under my skin. It has now moved into my eyes and i feel it inside my ears as well. I was hoping it was viral and would work its way out of my system. it followed a nasty viral flue infection in november. perspiration and heat make it worse but it is there under the skin all of the time. I have resisted scratching, and rub oatmeal and calomine based lotions into it and keep as cool as possible until it settles. but back it comes again.
i dont think it is an allergic reaction as i have not changed medication or shampoor or perfume or anything. i reduced my washing powder (the same one i have used for years) in case that was a problem. sometimes i think it is a nerve breakdown in the skin. my doctor laughed it off the only time i told him about it.
a child of a family i know was complaining to his parents of a rash on his head. another child talks about feeling a funny tingly thing on her arms which she scratches and they go away. it may be contagious.
albury
i am depressed now after reading you comments. one thing i can add. i took an antibiotic last november when i was ill with sinus infection. not mhy normal doctor. he gave me an antibiotic that they warned i should not go into the sun whilst taking it. i was on a beach holiday. i lathered myself with sunscreen but didnt stay inside. the rash started once i got home. could it be that. i cant remember thename of it.
perhaps you could all think whether you took an antibiotic prior to the rash first starting.
has anyone found a solution yet?
I was taking Tamoxifen during 4 years, after having a couble mastectomy. About a year into the Tamoxifen treatment I got the weardest rash, on my upper chest, all around the neck and all over my face, my ears - and in the bend of the right arm. (Nowhere else on the body) Red, itchy and swelling. It kind of changed and moved around, but still only on the upper chest, around the neck, the face, the ears and the bend of the right arm. After some days my face was swollen and I literally looked like a ninety year old lady (even though I was 39) My eyes were hardly visible at all. And my voice got hoarse. The doctors were trying to find out the reason - without success. The only thing that helped was Prednisone and a couple of prescription creams (Desonide and another I can't remember the name of). The symptoms went away but came back frequently. Finally, after more than a year of struggling, I googled the symptoms and Tamoxifen and found a website were women were posting Q&A's. Many other women had experienced the same thing. I talked to my oncologist and I got off the Tamoxifen for two weeks. Towards the end of the second week my son (5 years old at the time) said: "Mom, you don't look like a dragon any more!!!". I got on Tamoxifen again, and the symptoms returned. Got off, and they disappeared. After trying "on/off 4 times, with exactly the same result we were certain that Tamoxifen caused the problems. I continued the Tamoxifen treatment until 3 years ago and didn't have any problems at all with rash, swelling, itching, etc... UNTIL THIS SUMMER, when I had a small flare up for a week, but it went away on it's own. In November I had a new huge flare up, just like it was when I was taking Tamoxifen. Got Prednisone and it went away. In December it came back, even worse. My face was so swollen that my friends wouldn't recognize me. Prednisone helped again. Yesterday it came back and I just started a new round of Prednisone. I have some allergies but none of them would explain this reaction. MY OWN CONCLUSION at this point is: Tamoxifen trigged this reaction the first time. Last year I got into perimenopaus. Tamoxifen and perimenopaus/menopaus are both messing with your HORMONES. So now I'm:
1. Going to let my allergist, oncologist, endocrinologist and gynecologist communicate and coordinate hormonial tests and suggest treatments
2. Focus on alternative treatments for getting a better balance of my hormones (in addition to yoga, excercise and meditation)

Well, If you have a swollen eye, its either a bug bite. Or you have been rubbing your eyes with dirty hands. So soak a cold towel in cold water and apply it to the swollen eye.
