Hi I suffer from rather severe allergic conjuctivits this time of year. My allergist has put me on prescription eye drops for this but I have one eye that is swollen shut just about and the vision is so blurry I can't really see out of it. Not to mention it is sensitive to light. I was just wondering if anyone else has been thru this and what they did for it, besides suffer thru it.?

Hi there,

Oh yes... I have definitely been through this array of symptoms, nearly every summer. It's awful, isn't it? I've had days when I can't stand to use my eyes, they are so sensitive. When I get that bad, before this year, I found the only thing that really got me better was a steroid eye drop, such as dexamethasone. You don't say what your doctor gave you, so I don't know if it was a steroid or not. My eye doctor told me that when things get bad, the drops like Patanol, etc., just won't work that well.

This year, though, I've been having good luck with some new over the counter antihistamine eye drops, called Alaway. They contain the antihistamine ketotifen and I think there's another brand sold too, with this same ingredient. I use them as soon as I feel my eyes starting to act up, whether it's itchy, tearing, burning, or light sensitivity. So far, they've worked, and quickly. And the symptoms don't come back for at least a day or two, sometimes several days.

In the past, once I got on the steroid eye drops, things resolved quickly, but I've also found that placing cold compresses on my eyes intermittently is a wonderful comfort measure until the symptoms do start to ease. I wrap a few ice cubes in a terry washcloth. Works for me! Smile

Hope you're feeling better soon... I empathize.
