Q: Lifetime of allergies

I have lived my entire life (34 years) dealing with allergies that no medication, no shots, and no doctor can seem to get under control.  I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they tried to fix it.  I've had sinus surgery twice to remove polyps and fix deviated septum. I've had allergy testing, allergy shots, I've tried RX pills and many many many over the counter pills.  I've used multiple nasal sprays (mainly RX) and I still sneeze all day and I go through a box of tissues in 2-3 days.  I don't have pets, and it doesn't matter where I am or what time of year it is.  365 days a year, 24 hours a day.  I don't smoke, and I don't live in a house where there is smoking.  It is mostly my sinuses, sneezing and congestion and runny nose.  Sometimes I get watery eyes.  I cough a little.  Does anyone have any ideas to help me?

Hi Lillith... It could be that dust or mold are your allergy triggers. Both are around in your inside home environment most all the time. Dust mites, especially, are difficult to totally get rid of. You can try washing your bed linens weekly in HOT water to kill them off in bedding, which is the place they love most. Also put zippered closure hypoallergenic covers on your pillows and mattress, to keep the dust mites out of those locations.

Vacuum at least weekly with a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter. Keep knicknacks (which gather dust) to a minimum and dust furniture with an electrostatic duster frequently. You may want to wear a face mask when dusting or vacuuming.

Change your heater filters monthly. Also, wooden or tiled floors are better than carpeting, which also harbors dust mites. Wood or leather furniture is preferable to overstuffed, upholstered furniture, for the same reason.

I've had allergies all my life too and they are never really absent, though I don't think I suffer as much as you do. And no medicine completely controls my symptoms either, though I've found Allegra and Zyrtec to be somewhat helpful. So I do understand what you're going through.

Try a few of those environmental measures and see if it makes a difference.

Take care,

Kathi

Dear Lillith76,

I am 36 years old and I am dealing with all the problems you described for about two years now. My 12 year old daughter has the same thing to a point that both of us have asthma. I saw about 7 doctors in one year and all of them prescribed loads of medications of which none of them worked. I didn't have any surgeries. I try to avoid allergy triggers, which I find to be almost impossible because they seem to be everywhere. I just keep trying to find the medication which works for me. The only thing I found to help so far is butterbur and Sabadil which is a homeopathic medicine. The symptoms are not gone, but they improved within a week. I wish I could help you more with that, because I know how badly it affects your life. Also, I don't know if those two help you too. I am just at a point that I don't know what to try anymore to make it go away. I took benadryl, zyrtec, allegra, all over the counter medicines, fluticasone, nasonex and Claratin (which I actually had an allergic reaction to, to the point that I was hospitalized) Good luck to you. alexandra
