Yes and no.

 

Yes, they are both antihistamines. They are both used to treat ear-round allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and watery/itching eyes. They're both used to treat hives too.

 

And no, they are different medicines. Allegra's generic name is fexofenadine

Claritin's generic name is desloratadine.

 

Which one would work best for you depends. Read Kathi MacNaughton's post about how to find the best allergy medicine for some tips. One may work better for you than the other, or they both may work the same (or neither may relieve your symptoms). Talk to your doctor about them!

Hi Chipper,

 

Thank you for your question! In addition to the information provided above, it's important to mention that Allegra-D contains a second ingredient. Allegra-D contains pseudoephedrine, a decongestant, in addition to the antihistamine. Claritin also comes in a combination with the decongestant.
