Q: Where is the best place generally to live with asthma?

I have acute asthma that affects me severely  -- emergency rooms, steroids, nebulizers, inhalers, antibiotics, loss of breath, loss of voice, loss of activities, I HATE this asthma centered life.   My husband and I will be retiring in 5 years or less if we have to, and we now live 2 miles from the beach in southern California.  Are we living in a bad place for allergies and asthma?   Should we move to the desert where its dryer?   I am allergic to pollen, dust, perfumes, grass, mold, dogs and cats and my triggers are virus irritants, smoke, emotional  upsets, stress, perfume, some cleaning chemicals.   Just laughing will put  me into a tailspin.

Hi Sqeeky... Cute picture! Sorry to hear you're suffering so from your asthma, though. Have you consulted with an allergist or pulmonologist to make sure you're on the best treatment plan? If not, I highly recommend it.

Experts used to recommend dry, desert-like climates to asthmatics, but we know now that even though you might notice symptoms improving for a while after you move to a new environment or climate, chances are that you'll eventually develop a sensitivity to things in the new climate too. So moving probably isn't the answer. It is believed that living near the seashore can be somewhat beneficial for allergies/asthma, as pollen levels tend to be lower there.

I know that's probably not much comfort, but your best bet is to get on a treatment plan that works better for you, so talk with an expert, OK?

Best,

Kathi
