Q: Is workplace building with previous water issues causing my new mold allergies?

I have had a skin test for sensitivity to mold resulting in a 4+ reaction to Aspergillus. I was skin tested 3+ years ago for mold and showed no reactions. I started a new job 4 months ago in a partial sublevel of a building that has been restored from water issues/damages. My allergist beleives my new job is aggrevating my new reaction to mold and advises me to seek another location in building fully above ground level or find another job. Problem is I love my job. Am I dening the obvious and and/or is this a case of guilty until proven otherwise with environmental testing for the building? Should I see a pulmonary specialist who is versed in such situations? Or do they exist?

Hi Iva... Sorry to hear about your dilemma. I'm quite certain your allergist is making an expert recommendation. I don't see what a pulmonologist would have to offer that would be different. You don't say how bad your symptoms are or if treatment is controlling them. With environmental allergies, you have to recognize that total avoidance of triggers may be impossible. You often have to weigh the value of trigger avoidance steps (such as getting a different job) against your overall health and level of discomfort. Can be a tough call.

To your health,

Kathi
