I was stung 6 weeks ago, had sever reaction & my glands are still swollen & hurt. What do I do?

The swelling was treated with Zyretec, steriods and pain meds.  It took days for the swelling to go down enough to feel and remove a stinger from my neck, behind my ear.  I still have sinus problems, some sore throat, constant swollen glands on that side and now along the top of my shoulder hurts too.  What do I do?

Hi Lois,

The fact that the stinger was left in place means you were stung by a honeybee or bumblebee. Local swelling, redness and pain are very typical of these reactions. Fortunately you did not have a severe systemic reaction (anaphylaxis) to the sting.

Here is a link to a review I wrote about bee stings: (click here)

The local toxic reaction that frequently accompanies the insect sting usually resolves within days. You may be experiencing a complication called cellulitis. Involvement of your sinuses is unusual.

I hope by now you have been rechecked by your doctor. Cellulitis is an infection of the skin and underlying tissues. Treatment requires antibiotics.

Hope you are well,
