I get an extremely itchy and raised excema rash (mainly around eyebrows, in beard, and on hands) from coming in contact with formadehyde (as diagnosed by patch test in Sep-08).  Not sure how to eliminate/control effectively - any help is appreciated.

Are you routinely exposed to formaldehyde at work? You should talk to your doctor about that and how you can avoid it.

If you are not frequently exposed at work, then the easiest thing to do is simply avoid formaldehyde and products that contain it.

Read labels carefully or seek hypoallergenic products that typically do not have powerful chemicals in them. The problem seems to happen primarily on your face -- are you sure it's formaldehyde you've come in contact with? You should talk to your doctor or get a referral to an allergist to make sure there isn't some other subtance that may be causing the reaction.

The best thing is to reduce your exposure to formaldehyde. Unfortunately, formaldehyde is everywhere including your home. Almost anything that is glued together such as cabinets, plywood, particle board, press board, MDF doors & moulding, laminate floors, insulation, furniture, closet organizers, flet covered hangers, shoe shelves hung from closet rods, toy boxes, etc.

Testing your home is easy and inexpensive. 10 tests for $99 and you can even double up tests on low level results. Start where you spend the most time and get the symptoms.

Get an air filter that removes formaldehyde and other chemicals. To my knowledge this requires potassium permanganate.

Replace your current house ventilation filter with a filter designed to remove chemicals. Again this will likely require potassium permanganate.

Open your windows as much as possilble. The air inside is about 6-10 times more polluted then the air outside. This is free. If you have pollen issues get a HEPA filter that has potassium permanganate.
