Q: Can I take claritin if I am out of zyrtec d

I am out of Zyrtec D and cannot get more because of financial difficulties.  My daughter takes generic Claritin (over the counter). Can I safely substitute the Claritin until I can get more Zyrtec D?

Hi Carolyn,

Thank you for your question. Zyrtec and Claritin are similar medications - they are both known as antihistamines. However, the Zyrtec-D has an additional ingredient that is a decongestant, which helps to relieve stuffy nose symptoms. If you aren't having a problem with a stuffy nose, the Claritin should work for you, and it may cause less drowsiness than the Zyrtec does. I hope this helps!

Best of luck,

Casey
