Q: My family & I recently moved from the UK, where most foods have allergy warnings. What's the idea behind "voluntary cautionary statements"? How do consumers dealing with allergies feel safe?

In the UK, we even found products that have the "nut-free promise" which gave us the confidence to feed our allergic child. As an American, I was surprised that given the high incidence of allergies here in the U.S. that food labelling here is not as thorough. I've noticed that many food companies that clearly use allergens in their products do not have the 'manufactured in a facility..." statement in products that not-so-savvy-but-allergic consumers may erroneously deem 'safe'. I don't get the point of an incomplete law/regulation regarding allergens. How can we as consumers lobby for better food labelling?
