Q: My two yeear old got semi swollen and red eyes last night - could it be an allergy?

We were at a friends house last night, where he has been before, but for shorter periods of time. They have a dog, a cat, and smoke. After being there for about an hour, his eyes started to itch him, got red and a little swollen. Today, they are still red, and he is still itching them a little bit, the swelling has gone down. He has been at other houses with pets and not had this reaction.

I have not given him any medication, but I am concerned about his eyes.

On another note, he also started back at day-care after being gone for a month, could it be pink eye? They are not goopy at all.

Hi Mamapie,

Sorry to hear that your little boy is experiencing some allergy issues. Sounds to me like a combination of the dog, cat and smoke might have been more than the little guy could handle. If he was near the dog or cat, some fur might have gotten on to his clothing and that is why he is still having some issues. Here is an article about dealing with pet allergies.

Allergins can also trigger Pink Eye or Conjuctivitis. If it turns out this is what he has, then you really need to take the boy to the doctor because only a doctor can diagnose and prescribe something to relieve the problem. Here is a link to some information about itchy red eyes and what to do to help soothe the eyes.
