Q: Puffy, irritated, stinging eyes.

I have had puffy, irritated, stinging/burning eyes for the past month or 2.  I initially went to my PCP who told me it was from allergies, gave me a sample of Optivar and told me to see my optometrist.  I used the Optivar and it did nothing for me.  So, I went to see an optometrist who immediately told me it was from allergies, gave me a sample of Pataday and Lotemax and told me to follow up in a week.  At my 1-week followup, there was no change in my condition, so he told me to continue the Pataday once in the morning and prescribed Pred Forte, which I have been using for the past week with no change in my condition.  My eyes are still very puffy and irritated.  I have another followup in a couple of days with my optometrist and I went ahead and made an appoitment with an allergist as well.  In the meantime, I'm going crazy!  Are my symptoms really from allergies?  I've also been taking Zytrec for the past couple of weeks and I am still absolutely miserable.  I assume it is allergies as my symptoms do worsen outdoors, but why isn't anything working to help at least reduce my symptoms??

Hi there,

I'm not a doctor and cannot diagnose you, but if your symptoms are not responding to the steroid eye drops such as Lotemax and PredForte, it would be surprising if allergies were at the root of your problems, in my opinion.

When I've had awful eye allergy symptoms, they've responded almost immediately to steroid eye drops (such as Lotemax). It's good, though, that you plan to see an allergist. If he/she is unable to help you, you might consider consulting with an ophthmalogist, who may have additional expertise above that of your optometrist.

Aside from that, it's difficult to know how to advise you without a certain diagnosis.

Good luck to you,

Kathi
