I had a severe reaction during a skin patch allergy test. What was it?

I recently went for allergy testing in hopes of starting immunotherapy to reduce the number of allergy medications I am taking.  Unfortunately, within 5 minutes of having the allergens "pricked" into my back, I began to sweat profusely, became dizzy, somewhat disoriented, and vomited.  They gave me an epi shot.  The doctors had a term for this rare type of reaction, but in my state of mind I don't recall what it was.  Do you know?  The doctor said this was a rare reaction but it does happen.  It seems it was all in vain as I was told I am not a good candidate for immunotherapy shots due to the reaction I had during testing.

Hi there,

I'm guessing you had an anaphylactic reaction, which is really just a fancy way of saying allergic shock. This is basically a whole body severe reaction to an allergen, which in this case was something given to you in the scratch test. You can read more about anaphylaxis here:

Because this condition can be life-threatening, your doctor probably does not want to put you at such risk. However, you might ask again if there is any way you could safely go this route. Or if sublingual immunotherapy might be an option.

Good luck!

Kathi

An allergy is the immune system's over-reaction to a normally harmless substance called an allergen.
