Q: How long should I expect the symptoms of allergic reaction to dye used for a CTA to last?

On Monday afternoon of this week I had a CT scan with contrast. I had a funny reaction to the saline (Severe tightness in my chest) but it only lasted a few seconds. The poor guy who gave it to me looked like he was going to vomit. He checked to make sure he hadn't given me the wrong thing and by then I felt fine again. When he injected the dye, I had the normal wave of heat that he had warned me about but nothing more. Tuesday morning I had an itchy rash in the crook of my elbow (opposite of the arm used for the IV). I had some general chest/abdominal pain and burning but nothing really alarming. My doc called so I told her about it - she immediately started talking about an iodine allergy. I had read all the online info already disputing the existence of an iodine allergy but didn't feel up to arguing about it. She told me to take some benadryl. I did so and felt much better. I woke up Wed. with the rash and general ab pain much improved. I did not take any more benadryl since it makes me too sleepy to work. As the morning progressed, my arm started itching more and the rash became more pronounced again. My chest and abdomen were hurting and burning quite a bit. I came home early about 1pm and took some benadryl. The symptoms are lessening again. Not gone, but bearable. I'm wondering how long this is going to last. ???
