I have found out that I am allergic to onions! Has anyone ever heard of this or dealt with it?
I have learned that I am allergic to onions and any food with any onion powder/etc in it. I get very sick (vomiting/diarrhea) within 30 min of eating it. Any thoughts on why this is happening or what I can do to stop it (besides not eating that food)?
Hi Dawn,
Though onions are not the most common culprits in food allergies, I have heard of it before. But actually, the symptoms you describe could also be a food intolerance instead of an allergy. You can read about the difference here:

It's probably a good idea to consult with an allergist. That's a doctor who specializes in treating allergies and immune system disorders, and who can do allergy testing and devise the right plan of care for you. If it's an allergy, allergy shots might help.
Of course, you need to avoid all foods with onion products in them, and that's going to mean learning how to read food labels, and asking questions in restaurants about how food is prepared. Unfortunately, onions are used pretty routinely in cooking, so it's going to be a challenge.
To your health,
Kathi

I'm not an expert but I read recently that you can also be allergic to pesticides or sulfites which may be present in onions.
I know there's a way to compensate for mild allergies or intolerence to lactose by taking the missing enzyme in the form of lactaid pills for instance. Is there an equivalent for onions?
