Q: I have had a chronic cough for the past four years

I think I caught a bug whilst flying about four years ago. Since then I am still coughing up mucus, but the thing that worries me most is the fact that I lost strength in my singing voice. Have been to the doctor who tested me for asthma, which he says I have. How can this coughing affect my singing voice.

Hi Mary,

Coughing is definitely one of the symptoms of asthma, though you really shouldn't be coughing up mucus on a regular basis. Asthma could affect your singing voice, because it causes an inflammation of your airways which makes it harder to breathe. Singing requires breath, so I would imagine that is the connection.

However, having said that, I would think that if your asthma were truly under control, you would not be having the coughing regularly, nor should it affect your voice. So, I would encourage you to talk with your doctor about changing your asthma treatment plan so that it gets in better control. You may need to try a different type of asthma medicine, work harder to reduce your exposure to your asthma triggers or a combination. The good news is, there are many effective asthma treatments available these days.

To your health,

Kathi
