Q: Hi, I would like to ask whether can landlord make me to stay in a rented flat where in each room is mould, when I suffer from atopic eczema since I was a baby?

When we had moved in, the eczema occured (though the symptoms vanished just some time before thanks to the medicaments from my doctor). I said about my problem and allergy to the landlord, but he said that this mould is common and that I should have told him about every detail of me and my body before. He do not want to solve this mould problem - there is mildew in the kitchen, also in fridge, in the bathroom on the ceiling and also in bedrooms, on the walls and hangings. In the bathroom, he just overpainted the mildew with a paincolour, however there is still the mildew odour because it was cleaned. Also the central heating is not working, is impossible to heat the flat, just living room, in bedrooms is the temperature about 10-12 grades, the window in the bathroom can not be closed, there is a hole, so I have bladder problems and also woman problems. I do not know who should I turn to and who to trust, I am from Slovakia and do not know what to do. I am trying to ask you for help at least to solve, if the landlord can make me to stay in such conditions. I would really appreciate your advise, opinion and help, I am very desperate. Thank you very much in advance. Eva, eva.kinzelova@gmail.com

Eva... I'm sorry, but I don't think is the right place for such questions. We are not legal or housing experts, just health experts. It certainly sounds as though you are in an appalling situation... can't you move?

If that's not an option, then you might check with local authorities about your tenant rights. I would think a landlord would have some obligation to provide a healthy, mold-free environment, but I really don't know about such things with any authority.

To your health,

Kathi
