Q: What are the chances of my 2 year old developing cat allergies?

My husband is only slightly allergic to cats. He had the blood test and the range was in the "normal" range.

I am not allergic at all.

My parents are not allergic.

Only 1 of my siblings is allergic, but he is allergic to everything.

My husband's mother is not allergic.

His father claims to be, but has never been tested.

His brother claims to be also, but has never been tested either.

We had 2 cats for my son's first year of life. We re-homed them because my husband thought he was allergic to them, but it turned out to be an allergy to dust mites.

I want a cat again. :(

My son is now 2 and has shown no signs of allergies toward any animals.

If he lived with 2 cats the first year of life and considering the genetic history, what are the chances he will develope an allergy later??

Hi Angie,

I don't think anyone can reliably predict whether someone will definitely get allergies or develop a specific type of allergic sensitivity. Your son is at increased risk because his father has allergies, but that doesn't mean he'll definitely get allergies too or that he would or would not have a cat allergy.

Experts are divided on whether exposure to animal dander early in life increases or decreases the risk for developing a sensitivity later on.

So, I'm sorry to tell you that it could be a matter of trial and error. If you do get a cat, work hard to keep it out of your child's sleeping and playing areas as much as possible to lessen the possibility of exposure. But it's not only cat dander that can cause allergies... it's also cat urine and cat saliva that can do it.

Hope that helps somewhat... :)

Take care,

Kathi
