Q: Allergy to Sea Water?

The last few times I've visited the beach I developed a facial rash after 2/3 days which are like little white puss filled spots that multply over the next few days and then heal over a couple of weeks. I don't have any allergies to seafood, as I've eaten seafood away from the beach and have been fine. I was wondering if it might have something to do with sea water. I've devloped this rash in waters in both India and Mexico. It is quite distressing, I hope someone can help.

Hi Medelina,

You're not alone. Other people on the site have experienced unexplained rashes after swimming in the ocean or otherwise being exposed to sea water.

Unfortunately, as far as medical research goes, there doesn't seem to be any such thing as a sea water allergy.

According to the Amercian Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), sea water or salt water allergy is unlikely, but the reaction may be something known as "seabather's eruption," a rash that happens after exposure to ocean water and usually covers the area of the body covered by the bathing suit.

The rash may be caused by an organism that may be too tiny to see, but will eventually grow into adult sea anemones. Some sea anemones can hurt people with poisonous stings. Researchers suspect that the tiny larval stage of the anemone may be what causes the rash.

According to the studies, there's very little that can be done for the rash and it usually goes away on its own in about 12 days. Talk to your doctor about what happened. Your doctor may be able to help you with tips for avoiding this again. If you still have questions about allergies, you may want to get a referal to an allergist, who can do allergy testing to help figured out if something else is causing the trouble.

Good luck!

Hi there. Your answer seems to be correct as for my case. I recently went to go swimming at the beach about a week ago and after 2 days, itching all over my body began to occur. It's been a week now and the itching has finally subsided but I still experience itching in my arms specially on the wrist area. By the way, it occassionally comes and goes....Hope this goes away sooner. Is there something I should worry about? thanks

I just came back from the doctor's about the same problem and she could not help me at all, except say that I should proctect from the sun AND shower right after bathing in the sea... she gave me a soothing menthol cream and that was it...

Thanks for the interesting opinion! I was recently in Portugal and Spain, first days were perfect, I did some swimming in Porto and it was all ok with my skin. But then in Spain (costa del Sol) after swimming and a nice day in sun my skin reacted with a terrible rash, facial area was the most affected part, also the palmar surface of both hands. Also i noticed it became worse in heat(of course i avoided sun, that's what everyone thinks is the cause...), so in the night and evening it went down. So it's interesting that my skin was ok after the first times I was in Porto, but reacted so bad just after a swimm in Spain. Maybe the little anemones are only angry there :)

Hello! I have the same exact reaction. It has always been my face and once spread to my upper back. Its defiately an allergy and not seabather's eruption. Growing up we thought it was sun poisoning even though I don't burn easy. Apparently this allergy is uncommon but I am seeing more and more response. So far I have no answers to help you other than the more your are exposed the worse it gets. Its not the actual water you are allergic to. Its something in the water but there are so many chemicals and things in the water that it would be impossible to pin down. Or at least that was the answer I was given by my doctor. I have had the same reaction in both the Atlantic and Gulf. There's got to be a common factor somewhere. I've grown up in Florida and have never had a problem eating seafood. Thats usually the first question I'm asked. Seafood allergies are mostly from Iodine. One day we will find an answer :o)

Hi, this just happened to me too!  After spending the weekend on the Costa Brava, Spain, my chin was swollen, red and covered in zillions of white puss filled spots.  It happened 12 years ago in Belize too.  I live near the sea and swim here without any problems. I don't have any other allergies although my facial skin is quite sensitive.  It seems to be going down now, 2 days later, but still pretty unpleasant.

This happens to me almost 3-4 times every summer.  When I go swimming 2 days in a raw and there is heat, I get red skin and filled spots which look like an infection! Even when I am under an umbrella the whole time to avoid the sun.

Whatever i do doesn't seem to help. One dermatologist told me that it is sun infection, another told me that it is caused by sweat! I don't have any other allergies although my skin is a little sensitive! Has any of you connected this with too much heat?

I live in Mexico and am constantly in the intense heat, however, the rash only appears when I'm on holiday by the sea...

Does it also appear if you swim by night? I live in Greece and I get a lot of heat as well but this thing happens only when I swimm say 2 to 5-6 when the sun is hotter than the rest of the day. The rush and the spots appear later, not when i am on the beach! Oh, go figure! Probably we have to avoid the sea but here in Greece during summer this is almost impossible! I hope someone finds a treatment that works!

OH MY GOD. I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY ME! for the last 3 years i have had this problem too. it is awful and i am dreading swimming in the sea in a few weeks time when i go to Greece. it doesn't happen when i swim in the pool, only if I go in the sea. i was wondering if it's something to do with the suncream i use? has anybody had any successs with combatting it? my rash starts just as you have all described but it has never actually cleared up since last year. i keep getting bursts of hard red lumps which are gradually creeeping up my face. antihistamines and antibiotics have made no difference.

I used to be an avid consumer of seafood until about three years ago when within a matter of days i developed an allergic reaction to fish and subsequently all seafood. In recent months, this has gotten worse to the point where my tongue tingles and swells, my throat tightens and my sinuses clog. Now i believe that i am having a reaction to the seawater. On my last two visits to the beach,  i came with reactions similar to those experienced after eating seafood. Is this for real? Where will it end?

I am allergic to shell fish and some other foods not related to the sea but I can say that 10 mins after i enter the sea to swim i start feeling my sking itching and red spots come up and i have to run out of the sea to wait 15 mins for them to clear up....i have been to my dermatologist but he gave me stronger antihistamines that i already take before i go swimming....... so what's going on here with the ocean?
