Q: I've had lung problems since the first year of life (pneumonia 3 times in the first 3 years), chronic bronchitis was diagnosed with seasonal asthema 4 years ago full blown asthema 2 years ago.

Well, I've had a persistant cough for 2 1/2 years with wheezing, shortness of breath, decreased lung function, chest pain, horseness and now for the last two weeks a new symptom of cronic heartburn even when I don't eat anything.  I've come off all NSAIDs and a beta-blocker I was on but with no change.  I feel 100% better on steroids but 2 days after I come off, "it" comes back with a vengence and I am in the bed for 4-5 days with full symptoms that can't be controlled.  Someone please help!  I'm at the end of my rope!

Hi... Sorry to hear you're feeling so poor. Heartburn is often a symptom of a medical condition called GERD (gastoesophageal reflux disease). GERD is often linked with poorly controlled asthma and if neither of them are gotten under control, more serious side effects can occur.

So it's important to be sure both conditions are treated adequately. Be sure to discuss your concerns with your personal physician and maybe consider consulting with an asthma/allergy specialist to fine-tune your treatment plan.

To your health,

Kathi

Hi Kathi, I am seeing an allergy/asthma dr. but he has no idea why I'm not responding to the asthma medications. I know that I'm allergic to a whole host of things but didnt receive relief with allergy shots in the past. I was diagnosed with GERD 10 years ago but I do not experience any heartburn and haven't for a number of years. I'm ready for the caugh to end and find an answer for it. It's been a long 2 1/2 years and I'm tired of sounding sick and feeling drained. Reply
