we first noticed red spots like broken blood vessels and the next morning his eye was swollen.  he looks like a boxer for how big it is.  we are not sure if it's mosquitos, he's not scratching the area nor is he complaining but it's to a point that both the bottom and the top eye lid are so swollen that his eye remains a bit closed.  if it is insects what kind cause a child's eye to swell so much?  this is the second time it has happened and all i've been told is to give Benadryl, cold compressions and hydrocortisone cream.  Could there be something else?  Some type of allergy test?

Hi Rita,

It's certainly possible that your son was bitten by some kind of insect and is having an allergic reaction. It's also possible that it could be an allergy to a poisonous plant like poison ivy, sumac or oak. But it might be wise to have a doctor look at it to be sure, and to check for infection or other serious injury.

One thing is for sure... cortisone cream should never be used around the eye. I think you'll find it says that right on the packaging. That's because the skin around the eyes can be extremely sensitive; the cream could also be easily rubbed into the eye from there, which could be even more irritating.

Good luck!

An allergy is the immune system's over-reaction to a normally harmless substance called an allergen.
