Hi Cheryl,
Rash and itching in the armpits may be caused by a contact reaction to your deodorant/antiperspirant. Other possibilities include an infection of the hair follicles, sebaceous glands or skin under the arms. Sometimes the problem starts out as an allergic reaction but then turns into an infection because of the scratching and skin damage associated with inflammation.
Until you can be evaluated by a doctor you should avoid rubbing, spraying or applying the deodorant you previously used. Try to keep your armpits clean and dry (loose cotton top, air-conditioned indoor environment). The doctor will be able to tell you whether a cream should be applied. Other forms of treatment may be warranted based on more information about your history and your physical examination.
Best Wishes,
J. Thompson, MD.
