Hi Loida... Sorry you're having such a tough time of it. As far as I know, new carpeting can emit fumes for a long time. There's no way for me to know just how sensitive you are to such things (people's sensitivities can vary greatly). You might try contacting the carpet manufacturer for more information.

Meanwhile, treatment may be in order, so talk with your eye doctor about what kind of eye drops or other treatment might be useful, given your medical history. I would also limit your exposure to the carpet as much as possible. In addition, you might want to request an examination of your eyes by your eye doctor, just to make sure nothing else is going on that has nothing to do with the carpet or formaldehyde.

To your health,

Kathi

Formaldehyde along with other chemcials come from many sources. Treating the symptoms is not the solution you need to eliminate the problem.

1) Increase the ventilation will lower the concentration

2) 'Cook' the carpet by actually heating the house on a hot day and ventilate well. Do NOT occupy the house during the cooking period, doing so would exposure you to higher levels.

3) Get an air filter that includes potassium permanganate as this will absorb much of today's chemical soup including formaldehyde. Honeywell has a CPZ filter cartridge that would work.

4) Replace the home furnance filter with one that contains potassium permanganate. Safe Home Filters is one source. If you elect to do this, I have a coupon code for a 10 or 15% discount.

5) Test your home to see if there are other sources of formaldehyde you currently are not aware of. You can get ten easy to use do-it-yourself tests for $99.
