New ingredient in cold medicines not as effective

If you have a bad cold, you may want to stand in line at the pharmacy rather than use over-the-counter medicines this winter. Many OTC cold medicines now contain phenylephrine (PE) rather than the nasal decongestant pseudoephedrine. Experts say PE is not as effective and has to be taken more frequently in order to ease symptoms. Medications containing pseudoephedrine were moved behind pharmacy counters in order to curb illegal drug production, but they are still available without a prescription. Read more »
