Obesity ups asthma hospitalizations

A new study has found that obese people with asthma are nearly five times more likely to be hospitalized because of the disease than asthmatics who are not obese. The study of 1,113 adult patients also found that obesity was associated with poorer disease control and a lower asthma-related quality-of-life. Previous research has linked the two conditions, but researchers say this study is the first to take into account risk factors such as acid reflux, smoking, and the use of steroid medications, which can skew study results. Once adjusted for these factors, researchers still found that obese patients were more likely than their peers to have asthma symptoms that required hospitalization.
