A review of 24 studies reveals that a defect on the filaggrin gene may be responsible for allergies and asthma. The gene is responsible for making sure the skin has an effective barrier against the environment, but when it mutates it appears to increase the risk of developing eczema, allergies, and asthma. The link between skin allergies such as eczema and filaggrin appeared to be particularly strong, researchers say.
