Sadness, stress, and depression may worsen asthma--particularly in kids. Researchers studied 90 asthmatic children as they watched a movie. Those who had symptoms of depression showed greater airway resistance as they watched troubling scenes than kids who did not have symptoms of depression. Distressed breathing was most common during scenes of family distress, loss, and death. Experts say this indicates that parents should be aware that stress could lead to worsening asthma symptoms in some children.
