Vietnamese researchers say gut parasites such as hookworms could lead to new treatments for allergies. To test their theory, they gave children in Vietnam medication to remove parasites from their body, since the worms are very common in that country. They found that clearing the parasites resulted in increased dust mite allergy in the participants. Experts say this may be because parasites have been so common in humans for so long that they actually help damped the immune response that can lead to diseases such as allergies and asthma.
