Nasal irrigation may do more harm than good: study

Rinsing the nose with a saline wash may do more harm than good when overused, some researchers say. The method is touted by allergy sufferers and by health experts who say it may help prevent infections. But some say it should only be used when infection is present, since constant nasal irrigation removes the good mucus along with the bad. In the most recent study, scientists found that people who irrigated the nose daily had five more sinus infections per year than those who stopped daily irrigation.
