The holiday season is often an occasion for toasting the coming New Year, but experts with the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology say holiday drinking can also trigger allergies and asthma. Alcohol contains sulfur dioxide (metabisulfite), yeast, and other additives that can cause allergic reactions such as hives, skin rashes, and shortness of breath--especially in people with asthma. These components of alcohol can also trigger histamine, which can cause a stuffy nose or a worsening of asthma symptoms.
