Childhood Asthma Linked to Pregnancy Virus

A common viral condition in pregnant women may double the risk of childhood asthma in babies born prematurely, a new study has found. The condition--called chorioamnionitis--is thought to account for half of all babies born before their due date. The most recent study found that out of 28,869 children, those whose mothers had had the condition were over twice as likely to develop asthma by age eight. Researchers say the condition in the mother is often not diagnosed because symptoms such as fever and tenderness of the uterus are common and may not even be present in those who have chorioamnionitis.   Read full story >
