Getting vitamin D from natural sunlight may help protect against childhood asthma, a new study suggests. Valencian researchers studied 45,000 children in nine Spanish cities and found that those who lived in colder, wetter cities in the North were more likely to have low vitamin D levels and more likely to have asthma than children who lived in sunny cities on the Mediterranean. Experts say low vitamin D levels have been identified in many asthma sufferers, and they suggest that supplements may be necessary for people who live in places where they are unable to get sufficient sunlight during the fall and winter months.
