Mental Exercise Enhances Your Memory

By Dharma S Khalsa, MD, Health Guide Tuesday, March 16, 2010
As Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones sang awhile ago:   "Oh no, it's only rock n' roll and I like it. I like it. Yes I do!"   I like it, too.  My personal special form of mental exercise or "brain aerobics" as it's called, is writing and playing music.   My interest in mus...

Dharma,  Great post... and it's comforting to know that I can grow new brain cells!  Like you, I was there in the 60's enjoying music and life in general!  I'm certain that I killed a few brain cells back then, as a matter of fact.  Trying new things is good therapy for many reasons.  The enjoyment of mastering (or even attempting) something can't be overstated.  When computers were relatively new, I bought one and struggled to figure the thing out and make some use of it.  Back then it cost me $1,000 and today isn't worth the cost to haul it off to the recycler.  The real value however, came in my ability to develop a new skill that continues to develop and get used.  I hope that my $1,000 investment over a decade ago has resulted in many new brain cells.  If so, the dividends justified the investment!  Thanks!  --  Joe  --

Wonderful and inspiring article - thanks.  Reminds me of a documentary we saw on how the creative arts help heal Alzheimer's patients, that we heard about on the Alz. Reading Room.

The Arts have always been popular, particularly becuase they are stimulating to our senses and our brain.  Keep listening, performing and having fun!

Thanks for this encouraging post! I love rock and roll - and have a son who has original music playing often. I haven't tried writing music myself, but hey, why not?

You made me smile.

Carol
