Shining the Light on Alzheimer's

By Dharma S Khalsa, MD, Health Guide Tuesday, July 31, 2012

I’m very happy to share with you a very positive study I recently read about the effect of vitamin D3 on Alzheimer’s.   It supports what I have been saying for many years.  You have the power to defeat Alzheimer’s with a healthy lifestyle that includes proper nutrition and adequate intake of proven nutritional supplements.

In this latest study, researchers tested the blood of Alzheimer’s patients and a healthy control group to isolate certain immune cells called macrophages.  These specialized cells have the ability to engulf beta-amyloid plaque to prevent it from causing damage in your brain.

After incubating the macrophages overnight with beta-amyloid, the researchers treated them with the active form of vitamin D3.  They found that the vitamin D3 played a key role in regulating genetic and intracellular mechanisms that allow macrophages to swallow up and clear beta-amyloid.

The same researchers previously showed that curcuminoids from the spice turmeric were also able to regulate one type of macrophage to remove beta-amyloid in the same way as vitamin D3 – although vitamin D3 up-regulates two types of macrophages.

If you haven’t been paying attention to your vitamin D3 intake, this study gives you one more excellent reason to start right now – especially if you live in a cloudy northern climate.
