Dementia, Alzheimer's, Memory Loss
I am not using any drugs, but mom is using Risperidone.
I am working closely with an assisted living facility in the care of my mother. Mom suffered a mild stroke in October of 2007 that went unrecognized until after having arthroscopic surgery on her right knee. In the months that followed, mom begin to misplace things, and leave things(purse, umbrella, etc.)behind on public transportation. She began having falls at the rate of one per year until 2009. In January of 2009, after mom fell over backwards in her shower, fracturing the L2 vertebrae, I spent three months living in her home caring for her. It was apparent that she could no longer live alone. I relocated her to an assisted living community close to my home. I visit her daily and communicate frequently with her doctor, the nursing department, and contract specialists providing services to her. I am also her designated POA and manage her financial matters for her. In 2009 alone, mom has fallen 25 times, avoiding serious injury since January. Mom has been diagnosed with "Unspecified Dementia". Mom's mental status declined rapidly after moving from her condominium to an assisted living environment. On the seven point scale, mom is probably a "six", based on my own research of her dementia.
