  1. So how much wiser are "normal" Americans?

I agree with John when he says that, as long as the person can handle the voting activitiy without assistance, they should be allowed to vote.

I am LJ, newly diagnosed with early onset dementia.

I believe that even a person in such a compromised condition as dementia can vote and make as wise a decision as most of the other Americans out there.

    Hi, L.J.,

I wanted to go on record that you're the person I mention toward the end of this Sharepost. I think you can provide a powerful voice in sharing stories about what you are going through that will educate and influence not only others who are experiencing what you are, but also policymakers at the local, state and national level.

    Take care!

As a daughter of a mother who died with dementia I have very mixed feelings. There was a time in the early stage that mother could have made decisions on her own about voting...she was still watching tv although not reading. However, as the dementia progressed and even t.v. was not reaching her mental capacity, I think it would be wrong for her to vote....the caretaker would be voting, not the person with dementia. I think someone who votes needs to make their decision on their own..

    Hi, Mary,

I agree with you about having mixed feelings and truly appreciate your sharing your thoughts to this Sharepost. We need to open this discussion across America so that all sides in this discussion about voter's rights for those with dementia have a chance to be heard by legislators.

    Thanks again for your feedback!
